Jeep Drivetrain Options

2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe

Are all Jeep models 4-wheel drive? Not in the 2025 lineup. There aren’t even any all-wheel drive Jeep models. If you’re shopping around Ankeny for Jeep AWD models or 4-wheel drive models, note that the current lineup consists of rear-wheel drive and 4X4 models. But what does 4X4 mean on a Jeep compared to AWD?

4X4 models continuously deliver torque to all four wheels at a lower gear ratio, making them ideal for off-road adventures around Boon. Learn which Jeep models offer 4X4, which come with rear-wheel drive, and which can be equipped with either. Then, contact DeYarman CDJR Ames and schedule a test drive at our showroom. We’re located in Ames.

Are All Jeep Models 4-Wheel Drive?

There are no Jeep AWD models in the current lineup. Our Nevada neighbors shopping for an all-wheel drive Jeep will find that Jeep models either come equipped with performance-oriented rear-wheel drive or 4X4 drivetrains optimized for off-roading. All Jeep vehicles come equipped with standard 4X4, save for the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Wagoneer models, which are available in either rear-wheel drive or 4X4. But what does 4X4 mean on a Jeep? Jeep models are available with many types of 4X4 drivetrains, each with different handling capabilities fine-tuned for specific terrains.

What Does 4X4 Mean on a Jeep?

Jeep engineers have developed a variety of 4X4 systems, several of which are exclusive to different Jeep models. For instance, the Jeep Grand Cherokee can come equipped with the Quadra-Trac, Quadra-Trac II, Quadra-Drive, or Quadra-Trac SRT 4X4 systems. Each drivetrain was designed with a different form of driving in mind. Meanwhile, the Wrangler is available with the following three 4X4 systems:

  • Command-Trac® 4X4 System: This drivetrain delivers torque to all four wheels and includes a 2:72:1 gear ratio, perfect for crawling on rocky terrain.
  • Selec-Trac® 4X4 System: This system allows you to switch between 2WD and 4X4 to maximize fuel economy on your commute and handling on off-road adventures.
  • Rock-Trac® System: This system includes a 4:1 low gear ratio and 100:1 crawl ratio, making it ideal for serious off-roaders looking to take on formidable talus slopes.
